équilibre is a wellness studio in Singapore offering Pilates, GYROTONIC®, and ballet barre classes. Founded and headed by Susan Su, the first Taiwanese classical ballerina to graduate from the world-renowned Vienna Municipal Conservatory Austria, équilibre delivers long-lasting, visible results by combining principles from multiple methods and a specialised understanding of body and musculoskeletal movements.

We believe results can only be achieved with good form and consistent practice. This is why our studio uses a highly hands-on teaching approach by consistently providing technique feedback, micro corrections through physical adjustments, and verbal cues to students in both private and group classes.

Sessions at équilibre are fun, dynamic, and always challenging. Classes do not adhere to a syllabus; instead, we customise each session based on your needs, body condition, and how quickly your body is able to adapt to various exercises. Group classes are capped at six students a class for our teachers to offer personalised instructions and advise on exercise modifications if necessary.

équilibre is committed to achieving your short-term goals while protecting your long-term health. We employ a proactive approach to your wellbeing, designing our programmes to address existing injuries while improving strength, flexibility, and joint mobility to reduce the risk of future injuries. With over 10 years of experience as a Pilates instructor, Susan is able to cater to physical fitness requirements, such as pre- and post-natal care or pre- and post-surgery needs.

Susan is the Founder of équilibre and teaches as a Principal Instructor. She is fully certified in all disciplines of STOTT Pilates Level 1 (Matwork & Reformer; Cadillac; Chair, and Barrels) and the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods. Trusted among clients, Susan is a perceptive, patient, and dynamic instructor who infuses her classes with fun and energy. She possesses an in-depth understanding of musculature and biomechanics and is able to accurately recommend individualised treatment regimes for her clients.

As the first Asian graduate of the world-renowned Vienna Municipal Conservatory Austria, Susan began her career as a talented classical ballerina, but was forced into retirement after four years from debilitating ankle and hip injuries. She started teaching Pilates in 2005 after experiencing the benefits of Pilates during her own rehabilitation. Susan firmly believes students can only progress insofar as their instructors learn and continually upgrades her skills to better serve her clients. She is accredited in other fitness and wellness techniques such as Myofascial Release Therapy, RockTape Kinesiology, ZEN.GA, REDCORD, and TRX.

Pilates

Also known as contrology, Pilates focuses on strengthening your core muscles (comprising both abdominal and back muscles) and increasing your postural and muscular strength through low-impact exercises. The practice lengthens major muscle groups in a balanced fashion, thereby rehabilitating existing injuries and preventing future ones. Pilates also improves joint mobility as it focuses on proper biomechanics.

We offer private and semi-private sessions (limited to two or three per class). Students who are new to Pilates must undergo at least one private session (or semi-private if you have friends of similar physical fitness levels) with an instructor. You will be given a complimentary, comprehensive postural analysis during your first session wherein an instructor will assess your body condition and determine your strengths and weaknesses. All private and semi-private sessions utilise studio equipment, including the V2 Max Reformer, arc and ladder barrels, stability chair, BOSU balls, and mat. Students can advance to our group classes once they have a sound foundation of Pilates basics.

We currently offer two group classes: Pilates Blast and Pilates Express. Each group session is limited to six students.

Pilates Express is an accelerated programme combining traditional mat work with reformer exercises. The fast-paced, 55-minute class is an ideal form of exercise for time-pressed office workers as it incorporates cardio.

Pilates Blast is a reformer-focused class that also utilises BOSU balls and mat work. While slower than our lunchtime express class, instructors continue to challenge students and develop strength and flexibility through varied exercises.

Looking to push yourself? The Pilates Challenge is a fun and intensive 7-day regime designed by Susan for groups of 4-6 students. Speak to us about joining our monthly Challenge at +65 9633 8016.

Jumpboard

This class utilises a padded foot plate, also known as a jump board, on the Pilates V2 Max Reformer. The workout is built around a choreographed cardio routine and employs the principles of Plyometrics, which develop speed and power in the quadriceps. Your core strength will be challenged as you improve your coordination and balance. This is a low-impact class as the non-gravitational jumping movements produce less stress on joints.

GYROTONIC®

The GYROTONIC® method comprises circular, spiralling movements performed fluidly on specialised equipment. This class is primarily conducted using the GYROTONIC Expansion System®, a system of weighted pulleys and rotational discs, building balance, core strength, and flexibility while enhancing joint mobility and stimulating circulation. The multiplanar movement patterns closely resemble movement patterns of everyday life and reduce the risk of degenerative joint mobility conditions such as osteoarthritis (arthrosis).

Ballet Barre

This programme taps on Susan's classical ballet training and fuses Ballet fundamentals Pilates, and GYROTONIC® principles. Unlike trendy barre classes, Ballet Barre at équilibre is conducted at a slower pace and in accordance to the classical ballet syllabus, developing strength and long, lean muscles through isometric contractions. We utilise a range of motions to target different muscle fibres, focusing on the extension and elongation of the entire body by strengthening the spine, knee, hip, and ankle joints.

Group Schedule

As group classes cater to a maximum of six participants per session, clients are encouraged to reserve their spots at least 2 days in advance by giving us a call or sending a text to +65 9633 8016.

Policy & FAQs

Combining classes

As équilibre offers multiple fitness and wellness methods, we always welcome students to mix and match these methods in their exercise regime. You can incorporate Pilates, the Gyrotonic® method, Suspension training, and even Ballet Barre exercises in a single session. Our instructors are trained to design workouts to challenge your body and will begin incorporating different methods once a student has mastered good form and shows an understanding of proper biomechanics.

Frequency and results

Consistency is key to seeing quicker results. We recommend beginning with twice-weekly classes in order for your body to efficiently learn the required techniques.

Class safety

Safety is our utmost priority in all our classes and methods we use, which is why we tailor workouts to suit individual needs and body conditions. The methods we employ in class have been assessed and established as safe, reputable practices by and within the industry. équilibre instructors are all fully qualified to lead the classes they teach, having completed at least one industry apprenticeship after obtaining their certification.

Existing injuries and rehabilitation

If you currently suffer from existing pain (e.g. joint pain), we always recommend consulting a doctor before undertaking exercises. We do, however, work with clients with existing injuries as part of their rehabilitation process. Some common conditions we work around are: slipped discs, knee pain, hip pain, and ankle pain. We also conduct classes for pre- and post- surgery clients, and are able to work with any degree of injury and/or level of fitness by modifying exercises and working within your comfort range. Under our instructors, you will learn to safely develop and/or re-develop strength, flexibility, and balance.

Pregnancy

We are experienced in working with pre- and post natal clients and understand how to safely adapt exercises to suit pregnant clients. Please consult your doctor before commencing or continuing your practice with us.

What to bring and wear

Please wear light and comfortable clothes that will allow you to move and stretch freely during your workout. Attire can be loose but should preferably be fitted to allow instructors to see the alignment of your bones and muscles, so they can properly correct your form if necessary. Men must wear underwear beneath their shorts. All students are required to wear socks for hygiene purposes. We provide fresh towels for your use.

Cancellation

Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel your class. This is applicable to both private and group sessions. Cancellations without a 24-hour window will be charged accordingly. Emergency changes to class schedules will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Studio etiquette

Our studio is a soothing, intimate space of healing where we respect each student's time. Please refrain from making too much noise while lessons are ongoing.
